Zurich Claims Report 2026: A Wake-Up Call for the Uninsured
When a father doesn’t come home one evening…
Or a mother’s heart suddenly stops without warning…
Or a friend, who always seemed strong, hears the words, “It’s cancer.”
These aren’t just events. They’re disasters.
Moments of sudden disruption, tearing the fabric of life, leaving families to pick up the pieces.
Yet so many of us pretend…
“It won’t happen to us.”
The Zurich Claims Report 2026—the 14th edition of the insurer’s annual “Value of Life” study—says otherwise. Based on Zurich life insurance claims paid in the UAE between 2023 and 2025, these claims statistics tell us exactly who is claiming, at what age, and why.
If you live in the UAE, this data is about you.
🚨 Zurich Claims Statistics 2026: The Headline Numbers
⏳ The paradox of living longer and dying sooner. The youngest age for a death claim has dropped to just 25 years (down two years since 2020), while the oldest has risen to 90 years. We are living longer on average, but uncertainty is arriving earlier for some.

💔 Deaths from heart attacks and strokes among women are now FOUR TIMES higher than in 2020. In last year’s Zurich claims report, this number had jumped 50%. Now it has quadrupled. Smoking and stress are major contributors—the claims data shows female smokers face a higher likelihood of a heart disease claim than male smokers. In fact, 1 in 10 women claiming living benefits for heart disease were smokers.
👉 Ladies & Gents—smoking is not cool at all.

🏥 Cancer and heart attack & stroke remain the leading causes of death claims. Among critical illness claims, cancer accounts for 52% and heart attack & stroke for 39%.
📊 3 out of every 5 Zurich claims are now for critical illness—not death. People are increasingly relying on their life insurance benefits while they’re still alive. The average age for a critical illness claim is 50, with claims starting as young as 19—right when responsibilities and financial pressures peak: mortgages, kids, aging parents.
🎗️ The gender divide in critical illness claims is stark:
- 4 out of every 5 women who claimed, claimed for cancer—and 1 in 2 women diagnosed with cancer are diagnosed with breast cancer.
- 1 out of every 2 men who claimed, claimed for heart attacks & strokes.

🧠 Mental health enters the claims conversation.
For the first time, the Zurich Claims Report covers mental wellbeing: by 2030, 1 in 7 people in the UAE could be living with a mental health condition. Anxiety and depression already make up 59% of recorded cases, and 1 in 6 millennials and Gen-Z individuals in the UAE are living with a mental health condition today.
⚠️ The Women’s Protection Gap
This part of the claims statistics deserves its own headline:
- 3 out of 5 insured women have life cover below USD 200,000.
- The average life cover for men is 88% higher than for women.
Women face rising heart-health risks, account for half of all breast cancer-driven critical illness claims, and report higher mental health prevalence (16% vs 14% for men)—yet remain significantly underinsured. If your household depends on a woman’s income or care, this gap needs closing. Now.
💡 What 14 Years of Claims Experience Has Taught Me
As a financial advisor in Dubai, I’ve seen these patterns play out in real life—not just in claims statistics. I’ve helped many clients claim for critical illnesses—heart attack, stroke, and cancer. These are survivors, dealt a tough hand, but they came out strong on the other side. At least money wasn’t a worry for them.
Fortunately, I’ve never had to process a death claim, and I hope I don’t have to for a very long time…
The 2026 Zurich claims statistics confirm what I see every year:
🔹 The probability of critical illness is much higher than death—3 in 5 claims prove it.
🔹 The average age for these claims is 50—when responsibilities and financial dependencies are at their peak.
🔹 Claims come from people as young as 19—proof that it’s never “too early” to prepare.
A heart attack doesn’t wait for you to finish paying the mortgage. Cancer doesn’t care about who you are and what responsibilities you have. Uncertainty doesn’t come with a warning.
🛡️ What These Claims Statistics Mean for You
Get covered—properly. Not just life insurance—critical illness cover that pays out while you’re still here, still fighting. (Bonus: Zurich offers free children’s critical illness cover for up to three children when you add a critical illness benefit to a whole of life policy or critical illness protection plan.)
Prioritize your health—physical AND mental. Move more, stretch more, quit smoking, eat well, get annual checkups. And don’t ignore mental wellbeing—it’s now officially part of the risk picture.
Create a financial plan. It gives your future a framework and structure.
Talk to your family. Sit down. Discuss what happens if life changes overnight. Discussions about death and uncertainty, while daunting, are really an act of love.
If disaster strikes—you’ll not be unprepared.
